The story of trench life during World War I through the lives of a French regiment. As men are killed and replaced jaunty Lt. Denet becomes more and more somber. His rival for the affection of nurse Monique is Capt. La Roche.
Lieutenant Michel Denet
Captain Paul La Roche
Papa La Roche / Pvt. Morin
Monique La Coste - nurse
Pipe-smoking whistling sgt
LaRoche's tall sgt
Relief captain
Duflous
Lieutenant Tannen
Major
Rigaud
Ledoux
Sentry (uncredited)
Morose tale of trench warfare in France during World War I. The three principles, Fredric March, Warner Baxter, and Lionel Barrymore, do a proper job here, particularly Warner Baxter. This film has to be one of the most depressing I've seen, but it's well-written, if a bit slow-moving at times. No spoilers, but that ending...oh my! Would I recommend? Go for it, if you like the genre, the actors, or the period it's set in.
